I have been wanting to try a God Eater game for a while. As an outsider, it looks like “anime Monster Hunter” and because I’ve actually watched the God Eater anime, I am even more interested in the games. God Eater 3 will soon release on the Nintendo Switch (July 12th) and, thankfully Bandai Namco made a demo available. Thus, here I am to tell you what I thought of playing said demo!

Starting at the beginning, you can create your own character. And let me tell you about that, if you’re into anime and/or manga, you will absolutely love this character creator. While you can’t customize things like height and body type, characters are still quite customizable. There are plenty of options, from accessories to eye color, including hair style, voice and some more customization options. If I could put it in other way, since I’ve already mention the anime side of this series, you can create and play as your ideal “waifu” or “husbando” in God Eater 3.

Unfortunately, there isn’t really much content available in this demo. Besides the character creator, there are only a handful of missions to play, which at least are good enough to get a feel for the combat. You don’t play alone as in Monster Hunter (by default), because you can bring AI-controlled partners during missions, so that satisfying feeling of having a whole party beating down a monster is not exclusive to online parties.

About the gameplay itself, if you have experience with Monster Hunter, that’s pretty much it: go into a sandbox to have a fight to the death with a big monster. For weapons, characters have sort of a three in one weapon. My character started with a dual blade, which could then be combo’ed into a lance which could also be transformed at the press of a button into a flamethrower-like weapon. The flamethrower worked as the hard-hitting option, and thus, to use it, I had to attack with the default dual blades/lance combos to charge the weapon. Both the dual blades and the lance were extremely fast, which is why the combat has such a prominent hack’n’slash feel to it. Of course, you need to keep paying attention to incoming attacks, but you can button mash your way out with the party and watch the damage numbers come up as you break enemy parts and, ultimately, kill it.

From the three missions available (plus the four tutorial variants), as expected they had varied difficulties. The first is the easiest one where there’s no strategy involved, just button mash until the monster dies. The second one starts involving some tactics, as the monsters tries to move to health recovery points and has more dangerous attacks. The third and last mission has you fight a monster that can kill you if you’re not careful. It’s not hard, but you definitely need to play more seriously, specially as this monster has a BURST mode where it can lash out some serious damage.

All in all, I liked playing this demo. I expect that the full game has a gradual difficulty increase in missions, and the ability to craft and equip new gear would keep me engaged in the game. It’s a shame that in the demo only the dual blades/lance combo is available, because teammates had other weapons such as a hammer and a scythe. Overall, the gameplay was quite satisfying, I only wish I had access to some progression systems to get a better feel for the full game. As a final verdict, thumbs up for God Eater 3!
